Himalayan Cryosphere
Introduction |
The Himalayan cryosphere refers to all forms of frozen water found in the Himalayan region, including glaciers, snow cover, ice, and permafrost. It plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of the Himalayas and supplying freshwater to millions of people living downstream.
Meaning of Himalayan Cryosphere |
The term cryosphere is derived from the Greek word kryos, meaning cold or frost. It includes the parts of the Earth’s surface where water exists in frozen form. In the Himalayas, the cryosphere is mainly represented by glaciers, seasonal snow, ice fields, and permafrost.
Major Components of the Himalayan Cryosphere |
(i) Glaciers | हिमनद
Glaciers are large masses of ice formed by the accumulation, compaction, and recrystallisation of snow over long periods. They move slowly under the influence of gravity and release meltwater into rivers.
Examples: Gangotri Glacier (गंगोत्री हिमनद), Siachen Glacier ()सियाचिन हिमनद and Zemu Glacier (जेमू हिमनद).
(ii) Snow Cover | हिमावरण
Snow cover refers to the layer of snow lying on the Earth’s surface. In the Himalayas, snowfall occurs mainly at higher elevations during winter and in certain areas during the summer monsoon.
Snow cover influences surface temperature, river runoff and the availability of water during different seasons.
Permafrost is ground that remains at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. It may contain soil, rocks, ice and organic matter.
When permafrost thaws, the ground may become unstable, increasing the risk of slope failure and other mountain hazards.
Ice occurs in glaciers, frozen water bodies and other cold environments. In high-altitude Himalayan areas, lakes may freeze during winter. Changes in temperature can affect the formation and melting of ice.
Distribution of the Himalayan Cryosphere |
The Himalayan cryosphere is distributed unevenly according to altitude, latitude, slope direction and climatic conditions. Large glaciers and extensive snow cover are generally found in high-altitude areas where temperatures remain low.
Important glacier regions include the Karakoram, western Himalayas, central Himalayas and eastern Himalayas. The extent and characteristics of glaciers differ from one region to another.
(i) Source of Freshwater | मीठे जल का स्रोत-
Glaciers and snow act as natural water reservoirs. Their meltwater contributes to the flow of major river systems originating in the Himalayan region.
Seasonal snowmelt and glacier melt help maintain river flows, particularly during periods when rainfall is limited. However, the contribution varies between rivers and seasons.
(iii) Agriculture and Irrigation | कृषि एवं सिंचाई-
Meltwater supports irrigation and agricultural activities in many downstream regions. Changes in the timing and quantity of meltwater can affect agricultural water availability.
Himalayan rivers provide opportunities for hydroelectric power generation. Reliable river flows are important for the planning and operation of hydropower projects.
The cryosphere influences mountain ecosystems, biodiversity and the availability of water for plants, animals and human communities.
Himalayan Cryosphere and Climate Change |
Climate change is increasing temperatures in many high-altitude areas. This contributes to glacier mass loss, changes in snowfall patterns, reduced snow cover in some areas and thawing of permafrost.
A 2026 assessment by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) reported an overall 12% reduction in glacier area across the Hindu Kush Himalaya between 1990 and 2020, although changes vary across the region.
Major Impacts |
The size and mass of glaciers decline when ice loss exceeds ice accumulation.
(ii) Changes in river flow- नदी प्रवाह में परिवर्तन: Changes in snowmelt and glacier melt may affect seasonal water availability.
The sudden release of water from a glacial lake can cause destructive downstream flooding.
Thawing frozen ground can contribute to landslides and other slope-related hazards.
Changes in snow and ice affect mountain habitats and the species that depend on them.
The Himalayan cryosphere can be protected indirectly by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, monitoring glaciers and snow cover, improving early-warning systems and managing water resources sustainably.
Scientific research, satellite observation and cooperation among Himalayan countries are also important for understanding cryospheric changes and reducing disaster risks.
The Himalayan cryosphere is a vital component of the Earth’s climate and water systems. It supports river flows, agriculture, ecosystems and human livelihoods. However, climate change is altering glaciers, snow cover and permafrost, creating challenges for water security and disaster management. Its long-term monitoring, scientific study and sustainable management are essential for the future of the Himalayan region.
